One of the pillars of the foundation of Jamaica’s contemporary popular music is Count Ossie. Count Ossie emerged on the Jamaican musical landscape during the early days of the development of the Rastafari Culture. He was one of the first exponents of the distinctive style of drumming used by the Rastafari community. His rhythmic sense was unequalled and his ability to transcend harmonic limitations and create seemingly endless melodic structure pointed to a new direction for local musicians. Count Ossie’s first producer, Harry Mudie, documented him during the ’50s and ’60s. As a tribute, Mudie has released “Remembering Count Ossie: A Rasta Reggae Legend,” which captures the maestro at his best in this formative period. ~Basil Walters
